            Summary of Field Work: |

Deployment and recovery of ~70 OBSs for the Cascadia Initiative. Deployments begin in 2011 with the project projected to last until 2015.
Each field season will begin with recovery of a subset of the OBSs. OBSs will be refurbished onshore, most likely in Newport, OR. Refurbishment will require at ~3 weeks of onshore time before an instrument can be redeployed.
The current STR requests 3 recovery and 3 deployment legs with one of the recovery legs using a ship with dynamic positioning. It is preferable that our first leg each year be a recovery leg using a ship with DP. This is because we anticipate that turning around TRM OBS may require more time than a standard OBS. The remaining 5 legs are staggered throughout the field season and it is likely that they will alternate between OBS deployment and recovery. |

            Summary of Facility Requirements: |

For recovery of the 20 trawl resistant mounted (TRM) OBSs a ship with dynamic positioning is required, for example, the Global class Thompson. These instruments cannot be recovered from a ship without DP.
All other deployments and recoveries can be done either on an Intermediate or Global Class ship.
If an Intermediate Class ship is used, such as the Wecoma, 5 additional legs will be required (2 for recovery of 50 other OBS) and 3 for redeployment of 70 OBS.
If a Global Class ship is used, such as the Thompson, fewer legs would be required. The stability of a Global Class ship also allows opening up the weather window a bit more and improves safety. |
