Ship Request

STR Management has moved to MFP

The US Academic Research Fleet is moving to Marine Facilities Planning (MFP) for scheduling initially and eventually cruise planning.

For all NEW or RESUBMITTED Projects/Ship Time Requests, go to and create a new SME. Some STRs for projects starting in 2022 and beyond have already been moved to Marine Facilities Planning ( Check your MFP Science Portal for any projects that might already be moved. If you need to make edits to projects that begin in 2022 and beyond, please contact for assistance. Be sure to indicate the Project and STR IDs that you would like to edit. For more information on getting into MFP, see the More Information button below.

Project Title: Acoustical characterization of the riverine environment Project Status: Submitted
Principal Investigator: D. Benjamin Reeder, NPS Project Institution: NPS

Summary of Field Work: Deploy 6 small moorings in the north channel and mouth of the Columbia River (MCR) to characterize the acoustical environment. Each mooring will consist of an anchor, an instrument, floatation and a surface float. I expect that deployment and recovery ops will require one day each. During the period between deployment and recovery, some of the moorings will be 'turned around' (quickly recovered, data dumped, re-batteried, redeployed). The balance of the period will be used to deploy a VLA over the side of the ship at fixed positions outside the river mouth.
Summary of Facility Requirements: Deck space for mooring deployments and recoveries. A-frame and winch with at least a 1000 lb rating. Electronic lab space for instruments.
Summary of other requirements and comments: R/R the R/V New Horizon or R/V Sproul. I've discussed this with Liz Brennen.
