Summary of Field Work: |
Ship testing of the proposed method will be conducted on a total of 3 cruises. Through a DUNCOC grant (Duke/University of North Carolina Oceanographic Consortium), the PI had received funding for a 5-day cruise in the second half of Yr 1 in the original submission. Now that the R/V Cape Hatteras has been retired, the PI requests funding through NSF for ship time on the R/V Atlantic Explorer in Yrs 2-4 onboard the R/V Atlantic Explorer in the Sargasso Sea, an oceanic region suited for testing of the proposed method. To the best of our knowledge, our results would represent the first report of underway oceanic N2 fixation measurements. We will compare these estimates with independent estimates of N2-fixation rates using the GC-FID approach. The cruise track has been chosen to cover a large gradient in potential N2 fixation rates. The August cruise date is based on the study of Orcutt et al. (2001) which shows that N2 fixation rates peak at the end of the summer at the Bermuda Ocean Time-Series (BATS). |

Explanation/justification for requested ports and dates of intermediate stops or to list additional port stops |
Short deployments on R/V Atlantic explorer offer several benefits: 1) The Sargasso Sea, one of the prime regions where oceanic N2 fixation (“hotspot”) has profound influence on the region’s biogeochemistry (Fig. 7) (Gruber 2004, Capone et al. 2005), is easily accessible from the home port of the R/V Atlantic Explorer in Bermuda. 2) The Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences, with its cutting-edge facilities, will be available for tuning and marine trials of the method prior to the cruise. |
