Summary of Field Work: |
We will rewuest shiptime aboard the R/V Walton Smith located at The Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science-University of Miami for this proposal. This ship was selected due to its vicinity to FIU and NOVA and because it has the trawling capabilities needed for our equipment. Over the next 2 years, we will plan two 6-day research cruises in the Florida Straits scheduled for each summer (1 in Summer 2016, 1 in Summer 2017). Shrimp will be collected using a 9 m2 opening/closing Tucker Trawl, equipped with a light-tight, insulated closing cod-end that has been used on ~30 cruises (by Frank, who will be the chief scientist and coordinator for all proposed cruises) to obtain living organisms in excellent condition. With this system, the cod-end can be closed at depth, ensuring the organisms are brought to the surface in cold water and are never exposed to damaging surface light levels. Upon net recovery, the closed cod-end will be detached from the net and animals will be sorted into holding containers under dim red light in a temperature controlled, light-tight environmental room. |
Summary of Facility Requirements: |
We need equipment that will pull a 9 m2 opening/closing Tucker Trawl. We also will need a room that we can use for live animal experiments and a wet lab space collecting animals. We will need a freezer to store tissue. |

Short Description of Op Area
for use in schedules: |
FL Straits |
Description of Op Area: |
Mid-water stations will begin approximately at 24°35’N and 80°29’W (Station Alpha), in approximately 200 m. Subsequent stations will be located south and westward of Station Alpha at depth intervals of 200 m until we reach 800 m (total of 4 mid-water stations). The actual number of stations and depths reached will depend on actual oceanic and meteorological conditions encountered. Stations may be adjusted during the cruise at the discretion of the CSOB and Captain depending on water depth and accessibility |
