Summary of Field Work: |
Wood packets will be deployed at three different sites at approximately 2000m. 12 wood falls of varying sizes and wood type (2 types) will be deployed at each locality (24 wood deployments at 3 localities). Deployments will occur along the central California coast.
Two research cruises are planned. In the early 2017 wood treatments will be deployed. The deployment cruise is expected to last 8 days including 3 contingency days. Two of these days are transit to/from port at San Francisco. The 24 wood bundles at each deployment site will be carried to the seafloor on a benthic elevator. An ROV/submersible will deploy and position the wood bundles at the site. The remaining time on the dive will be spent taking sediment cores and conducting video transects for benthic megafauna. To conduct all of the operations at a single site should take no more than 8-9 hours of bottom time, with early morning elevator deployment and evening elevator recovery. The three deployment areas are 100km apart ensuring that transit can occur overnight (this assumes a 8.15 knots and conservative estimate for the research vessel is 11 knots).
Each piece of wood will be deployed in synthetic fiber mesh bag sewn around the wood. This will allow for retrieval of wood deployments after they begin to deteriorate. Each log will also be equipped with polypropylene rope handle to allow for the manipulator to grab deployments. Each wood deployment will be marked with a number for identification.
Retrieval will occur in the mid 2018. Again, based on previous work retrieval and background sampling at each site is estimated to take a single day. Wood bundles will be places on a benthic elevator for retrieval. As part of PI McClain’s prior work, 300 µm mesh bags with sealable closing lids were developed and successfully used with an ROV. These ensure wood bundles remain intact and loss of the wood fall community during retrieval and cross contamination among different treatments is kept at minimum. In addition during retrieval dives, 3 cores (7-cm diameter) per log will be taken of the sediment surrounding the deployments as well as 100-m video transects around and away from the deployment site. Given the importance of the retrieval, extra contingency days are built in to make the cruise length 10 days.

******Special Note and Update: The nature of the field work is experimental and not location dependent. The basic requirement is three locations at similar depths (greater or equal to 1000m and ~100km apart). Any ROV/HOV that has two manipulator arms and reaching 1000m can be utilized. The ocean or region is also flexible, e.g. the Pacific is proposed but the Gulf of Mexico or other regions are equally desirable. Deployment date is flexible but retrieval needs to be ~1.5 years after deployment. A benthic elevator deployment and retrieval is required at each site. |
Summary of Facility Requirements: |
Either a ROV or Submersible is required that can obtain 1000 meter depth (2000m originally proposed). Two manipulator arms as well as bioboxes and canisters are required. Core tubes are required on either the ROV/submersible or on a benthic elevator. A benthic elevator deployment and retrieval is required at each site.

Description of Repeating cruise requirements: |
Recovery of wood fall packages deployed in the previous year require more time intensive ROV use. This also applies to the post-dive processing, storage and preservation of wood fall packages. It would be favorable to recover half of the packages in late February or early March so that processing and storage can be competed prior to the recovery of the additional experiments in early April. The second cruise would then be used to recover the remaining wood fall packages. We request two 12 day cruises with 2 days of MOB and 1 day of DEMOB. Transit days for each cruise would be two days, one day out and one day in to port. |
Justification/Explanation for ship choice, dates,
conflicts, number of days & multi-ship operations: |
Dates requested allow 1.5 years for experimental deployment. October is ideal for recovery since it coincides with decreased ship use and favorable weather in the northern Gulf of Mexico. Deployment of these wood fall experiments used the R/V Pelican, we fear however that recovery will be a much more arduous task both for the ROV needed and the amount of science personnel required to process wood packages. Our current request asks for the Pelican but a larger ship is an option that we are open to for the recovery cruises. |
