Ship Request

STR Management has moved to MFP

The US Academic Research Fleet is moving to Marine Facilities Planning (MFP) for scheduling initially and eventually cruise planning.

For all NEW or RESUBMITTED Projects/Ship Time Requests, go to https://mfp.us and create a new SME. Some STRs for projects starting in 2022 and beyond have already been moved to Marine Facilities Planning (mfp.us). Check your MFP Science Portal for any projects that might already be moved. If you need to make edits to projects that begin in 2022 and beyond, please contact mfp@unols.org for assistance. Be sure to indicate the Project and STR IDs that you would like to edit. For more information on getting into MFP, see the More Information button below.

Summary of Field Work: Month-long cruises to survey atmospheric and upper ocean conditions across the shelf near Duck, NC out across the Gulf Stream (Oct/Nov 2015) and in the upwelling region off southern California (Sep/Oct 2017).

Fieldwork will consist of coordinated surveys by two ships, AUV and Aircraft (CIRPAS Twin Otter). Ship-based work will include AUV deployment/recovery, wirewalker mooring deployments with surface buoys with atmospheric measurements, ship-based atmospheric measurements (rawindsondes, tethered balloon measurements, ceilometer, wind lidar) and upper ocean measurements (CTD, ADCP, microstructure profiler). AUVs to be deployed/recovered includer subsurface gliders and surface wavegliders.
Summary of Facility Requirements: We will need ship's CTD/ADCP. A frame and deck space for mooring deployment/recoveries, and AUV deployment/recoveries. Deck space and/or mounting locations for atmospheric sensors.
Summary of other requirements and comments: Coordination with CIRPAS Twin Otter Aircraft for atmosphere-ocean surveys and tethered balloon atmospheric measurements made from the ship.

Repeating Cruise?
(within same year)
No Interval:   # of Cruises:

Description of Repeating cruise requirements:
Justification/Explanation for ship choice, dates,
conflicts, number of days & multi-ship operations:
We need specific atmospheric conditions that occur
seasonally in Sep/Oct. October is preferred because of other cruise conflicts
with one of the PIs. We have a large number of participating scientists so an
Ocean or Global class ship is required.

Foreign Clearance and Permitting Requirements
Foreign Clearance Required? No Coastal States:
Important Info on Foreign Research Clearances

Are you or any member in your science party bringing in any science equipment items which are regulated for export by the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and/or the Export Administration Regulations (EAR)?
Yes If yes, have you applied for the necessary permits through your export control office? No
 Questions about ITAR/EAR regulations?

Explanation/justification for requested
ports and dates of intermediate stops
or to list additional port stops
We assumed it would be easiest to operate in/out of the Scripps Marine facility, since we're requesting FLIP and an Ocean/Global class vessel.
