Ship Request

STR Management has moved to MFP

The US Academic Research Fleet is moving to Marine Facilities Planning (MFP) for scheduling initially and eventually cruise planning.

For all NEW or RESUBMITTED Projects/Ship Time Requests, go to https://mfp.us and create a new SME. Some STRs for projects starting in 2022 and beyond have already been moved to Marine Facilities Planning (mfp.us). Check your MFP Science Portal for any projects that might already be moved. If you need to make edits to projects that begin in 2022 and beyond, please contact mfp@unols.org for assistance. Be sure to indicate the Project and STR IDs that you would like to edit. For more information on getting into MFP, see the More Information button below.

  NSF Hypoxia Behavior  -  2017  -  Clifford A Barnes
  Project Information
Project Title: Causes and consequences of hypoxia and pH impacts on zooplankton: Linking movement behavior to vertical distribution. Project Status: Submitted
Principal Investigator: Julie E. Keister, UW Project Institution: UW
Project ID: 105420 Version #: 4
Date Submitted: 8/2/2016 5:34:00 PM Created By: Julie E. Keister
Date Last Modified: 1/26/2017 3:38:00 PM URI Serial #: None
Funding Agencies: NSF/OCE/BIO - 1657992 - Funded
Summary of Field Work: CTD casts, zooplankton pump, net tows, and lagrangian drifters with camera systems.
Summary of Facility Requirements: Require deck space for CTD+Niskin rosette and several moderately sized drifters; lab space for sample processing. May need small boat such as CAB's Avon to retrieve drifters near shore.
Summary of other requirements and comments: Very late night or early morning work schedule required. See comments.

Requested Ship, Operating Days and Dates
Year: 2017 Ship/Facility: Clifford A Barnes
Optimum Start Date: 5/12/2017 Dates to Avoid: These dates are fairly flexible and may want to change slightly depending on conditions that year. The intent is to capture early summer conditions prior to hypoxia in S. Hood Canal on the early cruises (~May), then during peak hypoxia later in the summer (Aug.).

Repeating Cruise?
(within same year)
Yes Interval: 3.5 months # of Cruises: 2

Description of Repeating cruise requirements: Space over late spring/early summer to late summer.
2nd cruise must be complete before late Sept to be sure to capture hypoxic conditions. Earlier cruise should be prior to onset of hypoxia in lower Hood Canal.
Justification/Explanation for ship choice, dates,
conflicts, number of days & multi-ship operations:
The Barnes is sufficient size. Dates are flexible within conditions described above.

We will likely want to work during sunset and sunrise (8pm-8am). One day of demob on either end of the cruise is included for crew re-adjustment before their next cruise - that day is not needed for offloading.
