Summary of Field Work: |
We have science target offshore Oregon. This target would provide (i) an important science target (see the later Science section) to focus the trainees' attention on contributing to a meaningful advance of scientific knowledge that will result in publications, and (ii) a facility to accommodate post-cruise seismic processing and interpretation workshop (e.g. Scripps Institute of Oceanography, San Diego, CA; Hatfield Marine Science Center, Newport, OR, etc.). |
Summary of Facility Requirements: |
We request shiptime ideally aboard R/V Revelle or R/V Sally Ride with working compressor (s) with a compressor engineer participating in the cruise, with the transit from Newport to San Diego in September 2017. |
Summary of other requirements and comments: |
Spoken with Holly Smith and Lee Ellet (Scripps portable seismic), the IHA permit can go forward as soon as the funding can get secured. |

Justification/Explanation for ship choice, dates,
conflicts, number of days & multi-ship operations: |
Roger Revelle has been proven to have two working compressors. We would request SIO to provide a compressor engineer sailing with us to ensure to mitigate any compressor-related survey troubles. Either Roger Revelle or Sally Ride will be on the westcoast during summer-early fall 2017, which will situate the training cruise with short transit to science target (Cascadia) and with post-cruise workshop facility in one of the state institution (i.e. SIO, OSU, UW, etc.). Summer-early Fall is the only time window that is available for teaching faculty (PIs) and to maximize the participant pool (i.e. graduate students who are on teaching assistantship cannot sail in the exam/grading period of the semester). |

Explain Instrumentation or Capability requirements that could affect choice of ship in scheduling. |
SIO Portable seismic is requested for this cruise. Roger Revelle has two working compressors. SIO Geophysics group is willing to also provide a support for a compressor engineer onboard (Lee Ellet, personal communication).
