Summary of Field Work: An array consisting of 4 Current and Pressure recording Inverted Echo Sounders (CPIES) will be deployed on the continental slope just offshore Newport, Oregon on a cruise in April 2017, and recovered six months later in October-November 2017. Full water-column CTDs should be taken at each CPIES site.
Summary of Facility Requirements: The proposed deployment adds one day to an existing 4-day cruise in April 2017 aboard R/V Sikuliaq (W. Wilcock (UW, and M. Zumberge, G. Sasagawa, SIO) from Newport OR to Seattle WA.

The proposed recovery cruise is a dedicated cruise in October-November 2017 aboard R/V Oceanus requiring 24 work hours plus the short transit time to and from Newport, OR.

Launch operations for CPIES require a stern A-frame with air-tugger or capstan or small winch for lifting about 240 lbs.

Recovery operations occur along the forward starboard rail, assisted by a davit and either block-and-tackle or air-tugger, to lift pieces of about 80 lbs.

For both cruises a CTD winch and CTD with back-up sensors, rosette frame and salinometer are requested for hydrographic sampling to within about 20m of the bottom in 1900m to 3000m water depths.

We would like to use a 12kHz in-hull transducer for acoustic signaling and tracking the acoustic beacons on the CPIES during launch and recovery. The CPIES relocation radio is standardly 156.875MHz, “CHANNLE 77” marine band. We require a Taiyo RDF for CPIES recovery on each cruise.
Summary of other requirements and comments: This project collaborates with NSF’s Cascadia Initiative by the MG&G group by William Wilcock, David Schmidt and Parker MacCready (UW), and Mark Zumberge and Glenn Sasagawa (UCSD-SIO). Their funded project title is “Collaborative Research: Constraints on Interseismic Deformation Offshore Oregon from Calibrated Continuous Pressure Records.”

conflicts, number of days & multi-ship operations:
One science day is the working time required for CPIES and CTD operations on station plus maneuvering and short steaming (< 1 hour) between sites.
The CTD should occur while the CPIES is on the sea floor prior to recovery. The combined CPIES and CTD operations require on average 4.25 hrs per site, plus maneuvering between sites, summing to 20 hrs altogether.

Estimated transit distance is approximately 100 km = 55nm from Newport, Oregon (44.64N/ 124.05W) to the work site (44.45N/ 125.14W), requiring conservatively 6-7 hours at 8-9 kts.

Mobilization requires about 3 hours to load and tie down our deck gear and attach it to the 12kHz hull-mounted transducer, plus verify the Taiyo RDF.

Demobilization requires about 2 hours to pack up and offload all our equipment.
The above mob/ demob times are not zero, but this form accepts only integer day values. Should we add one?
