Summary of Field Work: |
We lost 4 days due to a medical emergency during our expedition in November 2016. This RST is for the replacement of the lost days. The loss of 4 days meant that we lost 4 Alvin Dives and ~8 dredges. We are requesting 4 days of ship time on the R/V Atlantis to make up lost Alvin Dives during the day operations and complete 8 dredges during the night operations.
Update 11/22/2017: We request an additional 3 days of science time to complete a reconnaissance mission to 9 50'N to investigate a potential recent eruption on the East Pacific Rise Ridge Axis. This time will include 2-3 AUV Sentry dives to create detailed maps of the axial volcanic zone and 2-3 HOV Alvin Dives to ground-truth and collect samples.
Our total science time request is 7 days: 4 days on location at the 8 20'N Seamounts and 3 days on site at 9 50'N East Pacific Rise.
Update: March 22, 2018, We are submitting an NSF EAGER to support the EPR 9 50N work, to include an Early Career training opportunity. As such, I have submitted a new STR that will encompass this effort. |
Summary of Facility Requirements: |
We require the use of the R/V Atlantis, dredges, AUV Sentry, and HOV Alvin. |
Summary of other requirements and comments: |
Due to weather constraints (hurricane season) the days need to fall between January 2018 and June 2018. As two of the co-Chiefs (Perfit and Gregg) have teaching obligations during the term, we request that or 4-day period not be tacked on as ancillary to a long expedition as it would put undue burden on two of the PI's home institutions.
Update 11/22/2017: We request an additional 3 days of science time to complete a reconnaissance mission to 9 50'N to investigate a potential recent eruption on the East Pacific Rise Ridge Axis. We will steam directly to 9 50'N as soon as the 4th HOV Alvin Dive at the 8 20'N Seamounts has been completed.
Our total science time request is 7 days: 4 days on location at the 8 20'N Seamounts and 3 days on site at 9 50'N East Pacific Rise. |
