Ship Request

STR Management has moved to MFP

The US Academic Research Fleet is moving to Marine Facilities Planning (MFP) for scheduling initially and eventually cruise planning.

For all NEW or RESUBMITTED Projects/Ship Time Requests, go to https://mfp.us and create a new SME. Some STRs for projects starting in 2022 and beyond have already been moved to Marine Facilities Planning (mfp.us). Check your MFP Science Portal for any projects that might already be moved. If you need to make edits to projects that begin in 2022 and beyond, please contact mfp@unols.org for assistance. Be sure to indicate the Project and STR IDs that you would like to edit. For more information on getting into MFP, see the More Information button below.

Funding Agencies: NOAA/OE - NONE - Funded
Summary of Field Work: A combination of ship, AUV, and deepwater ROV operations to investigate and characterize shelf edge and slop habitats generally offshore of Virginia to Florida/Georgia border.
Summary of Facility Requirements: Combination of regional and global class vessels, deepwater ROVs, and deepwater AUV. May include bottom trawl, mid-water nets, CTD, and benthic lander deployments.
Summary of other requirements and comments: OER intends to use a combination of UNOLS and NOAA facilities to support project platform requirements.

Description of Repeating cruise requirements:
Justification/Explanation for ship choice, dates,
conflicts, number of days & multi-ship operations:
This is a request for year two of an expected three-year interagency project. Because the Ron Brown will be in the Indian Ocean in 2018, OER is considering other options beyond the NOAA fleet, as using a smaller NOAA ship would require de-scoping the planned science.

The Atlantis and Alvin would provide excellent capabilities for this project, especially given the weather and current conditions we expect to be operating in.

The Alvin will be used to explore canyon, coral, and seep targets from Norfolk seep in the north to the Blake Plateau coral habitats in the south. The Alvin will allow scientists to work successfully in these high current environments and will be used to collect a variety of samples for the science team.
