Summary of Field Work: |
Characterization of hurricane-induced changes to sponge assemblages at sites known to be previously exposed to different levels of land-based stressors surrounding the island of St. Thomas, USVI. Sponge assemblages will be characterized along permanent transects, sponge biomass will be quantified in quadrats, and additional quarts will be delineated to assess sponge the rate of change in sponge assemblages. Sponge samples will be collected for population genetic analysis. |
Summary of Facility Requirements: |
SCUBA diving from small boats, nitrox for at least some dives, wet lab counter, balance for sponge biomass measurements (we can provide if necessary), hood for ethanol preservation of sponge vouchers, dry lab counter, freezer, vacuum filtration apparatus, basic glassware (or plasticware - need to know if we need to bring), drying oven if available (although air drying of sponge biomass can be started shipboard and continue on shore if not available) |
Summary of other requirements and comments: |
This is the second of two cruises requested to initiate this study, since our sites are currently unsupported by local infrastructure damaged by Hurricanes Irma and Maria. We anticipate that subsequent field work can be accomplished using land-based support. |
