Ship Request

STR Management has moved to MFP

The US Academic Research Fleet is moving to Marine Facilities Planning (MFP) for scheduling initially and eventually cruise planning.

For all NEW or RESUBMITTED Projects/Ship Time Requests, go to https://mfp.us and create a new SME. Some STRs for projects starting in 2022 and beyond have already been moved to Marine Facilities Planning (mfp.us). Check your MFP Science Portal for any projects that might already be moved. If you need to make edits to projects that begin in 2022 and beyond, please contact mfp@unols.org for assistance. Be sure to indicate the Project and STR IDs that you would like to edit. For more information on getting into MFP, see the More Information button below.

Project Title: Horizontal and Vertical Distribution of Thecosome Pteropods in Relation to Carbonate Chemistry in the Northwest Atlantic and Northeast Pacific Project Status: Submitted
Principal Investigator: Gareth Lawson, WHOI Project Institution: WHOI
Project ID: 102477 Version #: 1
Date Submitted: 5/19/2010 11:52:00 AM Created By: Gareth Lawson

Funding Agencies: NSF/OCE/BIO - 1041068 - Funded
Summary of Field Work: The objective of this work is to quantify the distribution, abundance, species composition, shell condition, and vertical migratory behavior of oceanic thecosome pteropods in the northwest Atlantic and northeast Pacific, in relation to concurrent measurements of carbonate chemistry. Two cruises will be conducted, to the northwest Atlantic in August 2011 and to the northeast Pacific in August 2012. A combination of underway data collection and station activities will be conducted with 5 instrument packages:
(1) A 1-m2 MOCNESS plankton net system
(2) A profiling Video Plankton Recorder / CTD package, including bottles for water sampling.
(3) A deep (500m) towed broadband acoustic scattering system
(4) A hull-mounted narrowband multi-frequency acoustic scattering system
(5) An underway multi-parameter inorganic carbon analyzer
Summary of Facility Requirements: Intermediate class vessels are requested, to provide the space and capabilities to deploy all of our various instrument platforms. Required facilities include:
(1) A winch with ca. 1000m of 0.5" or 0.68" conducting cable capable of high bandwidth data transfer (ie coax) for deploying the broadband acoustic system
(2) A winch with 0.322" cable for MOCNESS deployment to a maximum depth of 1000m and VPR/CTD deployment to a maximum depth of 3000m.
(3) Space for a 20" science van
(4) Instrument wells for temporary hull-mounting of 4 acoustic transducers (with diameters of 15" or less).
(5) Use of the WHOI-based profiling autoVPR system
(6) Access to distilled and seawater, and a fume hood.
