Ship Request

STR Management has moved to MFP

The US Academic Research Fleet is moving to Marine Facilities Planning (MFP) for scheduling initially and eventually cruise planning.

For all NEW or RESUBMITTED Projects/Ship Time Requests, go to https://mfp.us and create a new SME. Some STRs for projects starting in 2022 and beyond have already been moved to Marine Facilities Planning (mfp.us). Check your MFP Science Portal for any projects that might already be moved. If you need to make edits to projects that begin in 2022 and beyond, please contact mfp@unols.org for assistance. Be sure to indicate the Project and STR IDs that you would like to edit. For more information on getting into MFP, see the More Information button below.

Summary of Field Work: 14 days of Jason II dives sampling rocks from a moderately steep slope and 10 days of Sentry dives mapping (sidescan) and collecting magnetic data. Plus setting up transponder networks in two areas and dredging during down time. Concurrent Jason II and Sentry operations for about 5 days, depending on weather conditions etc.

Repeating Cruise?
(within same year)
No Interval:   # of Cruises:

Description of Repeating cruise requirements: .
Justification/Explanation for ship choice, dates,
conflicts, number of days & multi-ship operations:
Roger Revelle because main winch has a fibre optic cable so as to avoid having an 'on deck' winch (because we will be using both Sentry and Jason II and their associated vans). February/March preferred due to optimal weather conditions(although not a harsh weather environment) and lower shipping/travel costs. Total on site days is our best guess to complete Sentry & Jason II ops, including some overlapping operations.
Work Area for Cruise
Short Description of Op Area
for use in schedules:
Pito Deep
Description of Op Area: Operations area consists of the west flank of two "horstblocks" in the Pito Deep. The flanks are moderately steep extending from 3000-6000m depth

Foreign Clearance and Permitting Requirements
Foreign Clearance Required? No Coastal States:
Important Info on Foreign Research Clearances

Are you or any member in your science party bringing in any science equipment items which are regulated for export by the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and/or the Export Administration Regulations (EAR)?
No If yes, have you applied for the necessary permits through your export control office? No
 Questions about ITAR/EAR regulations?

Port Calls
Requested Start Port Intermediate Port(s) Requested End Port
Isla de Pascua, Chile None, , None, Bahia de Valparaiso, Chile
Explanation/justification for requested
ports and dates of intermediate stops
or to list additional port stops
Isla de Pascua (Easter Island) is very close to the operation area, but has limited port facilities. Valparaiso is a reasonably close major port. Longer transit at end of cruise will allow sample processing/curation, and preparation for shipping.

Explanation of Science Party Requirements and Technician Requirements We propose 9 scientists (including senior scientists thru graduate students) to man Jason II operations and dredging and rock sampling (3 teams of 3), and 3 scientists to carry out the Sentry/magnetics/sidescan operations (1 team). We also need a computer technician and a marine technician for dredging.
An additional 9 NDSL persons are recommended for Jason operations and 5 NDSL persons arerecommended for Sentry operations.
