Summary of Field Work: |
We propose 2 cruises in shelf waters along the west coast of California between San Diego, CA and 27.5°N (along the west coast of the northern Baja peninsula). During the cruises we will quantify the distribution and activity of the symbiotic nitrogen fixing cyanobacteria (UCYN-A) and its Haptophyte host(s). There are multiple UCYN-A clades and we will endeavor to quantify the distribution and activity of each. We will also conduct deck incubations to understand physical and chemical controls on the different UCYN-A subclade distributions and their rates of nitrogen fixation, as well as host productivity. Finally we will identify new UCYN-A subclades and hosts that are likely present. |
Summary of Facility Requirements: |
We require a ships capable of transiting between San Diego and 27.5°N. On each cruise we require CTD operations with water collections (full rosette), as well as, deck incubations. Water column biological, physical, and chemical profiles will be no deeper the 500m (most to ~300m). We will require a chemical hood for work with preservatives. Additionally we will need lab space for filtrations, bench top fluorometers, and likely a sorting flow cytometer. On the CTD we request a fluorometer, PAR sensor, transmissometer, and O2 sensor (in addition to the standard conductivity, temperature, and depth sensors). Finally, we request ADCP data- both for shallow and deep velocity measurements. We will also need to receive data transmission of satellite products to help guide our cruise track. The tracks in the proposal are guides. We will uses data such as sea surface temperature, sea surface height, and chlorophyll a to determine our specific track underway. |
