Ship Request

STR Management has moved to MFP

The US Academic Research Fleet is moving to Marine Facilities Planning (MFP) for scheduling initially and eventually cruise planning.

For all NEW or RESUBMITTED Projects/Ship Time Requests, go to and create a new SME. Some STRs for projects starting in 2022 and beyond have already been moved to Marine Facilities Planning ( Check your MFP Science Portal for any projects that might already be moved. If you need to make edits to projects that begin in 2022 and beyond, please contact for assistance. Be sure to indicate the Project and STR IDs that you would like to edit. For more information on getting into MFP, see the More Information button below.

  Project Information
Project Title: Quantifying ocean oxygen-to-carbon demand by chemical analyses and inverse models Project Status: Submitted
Principal Investigator: Adam Martiny, UCI Project Institution: UCI
Project ID: 106529 Version #: 1
Date Submitted: 7/5/2019 4:21:00 PM Created By: Adam Martiny
Date Last Modified: 12/17/2019 10:04:00 AM URI Serial #: None
Funding Agencies: NSF/OCE/CO - 1948842 - Funded
Summary of Field Work: Depth profiles of particulate organic matter concentrations and elemental ratios. We plan to use McClane pumps for high volume filtering. We will sample down to a depth of 1000 m.

We will participate in the BVAL cruise in the Western North Atlantic Ocean in 2021 (run by BATS out of BIOS, Bermuda) and propose to add three ship days.
Summary of Facility Requirements: We need 4 McClane pumps and three shipdays on the Atlantic Explorer to add to the already funded BVAL cruise.

Requested Ship, Operating Days and Dates
Year: 2021 Ship/Facility: Atlantic Explorer
Optimum Start Date: 10/1/2021 Dates to Avoid: The timeframe is inflexible as we are adding days to an existing cruise (BVAL). If 2021 was impossible, we could also do the cruise in 2022 or 2020.
Earliest Start Date: 9/20/2021 Multi-Ship Op: No
Latest Start Date: 10/14/2021 Other Ship(s): No multiple-ship use

Repeating Cruise?
(within same year)
No Interval:   # of Cruises:

Description of Repeating cruise requirements: NA
Justification/Explanation for ship choice, dates,
conflicts, number of days & multi-ship operations:
We are adding days to an existing cruise so the ship and timing are inflexible. However, we are somewhat flexible regarding which year the cruise occurs.

Foreign Clearance and Permitting Requirements
Foreign Clearance Required? No Coastal States:

Important Info on Foreign Research Clearances

Are you or any member in your science party bringing in any science equipment items which are regulated for export by the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and/or the Export Administration Regulations (EAR)?
No If yes, have you applied for the necessary permits through your export control office? No
 Questions about ITAR/EAR regulations?

Comments about foreign clearance requirements or
description of any other special permitting requirements
(e.g., MMPA, ESA, IHA, Marine Sanctuaries, etc.)
BIOS/BATS already has clearance for the cruise so no need for additional information. This was confirmed with Rod Johnson at BIOS.
